We're about to make our first high-speed run in the still-black 2008 Dodge Viper ACR when the old guy pulls up to our makeshift pit. He looks exactly like the guy you'd expect to meet in the middle of the Bonneville Salt Flats, like a worn-out Hank Williams, Jr.
Over the deafening cackle of his Cummins-powered diesel pickup, he yells, "What's you boys doin'?"
"We're going to make a few runs in this Viper here."
"Yeah, how fast will she run?"
"We don't really know. Maybe 190 or so."
By the expression on his face, it's obvious ol' Hank has figured out that we have no idea what we're doin'. He knows we're just a bunch of yahoos with a fast car. He takes a good long look at the big winged Viper, then he shuts off the truck's engine so we can hear him better.
"When you're going fast, the slightest gust of wind can flip you," he says. "That's why we only ran early in the morning when the air was calm."
We look up at the mid-afternoon sun and wonder what we've gotten ourselves into.
"And make sure you don't run out of room," he continues. "You think you have all the space in the world, then Floating Mountain is suddenly right in your face. I remember when I went for 300 mph back in 1978; my chutes didn't open and I almost didn't get her stopped." He runs his fingers through a white beard. "Didn't make 300 either," he adds. "Only 280."
Great. We thought this Bonneville thing was as easy as holding our foot down until the speedometer stopped moving. Now Mr. Monday Night has us imagining our $100,000 Viper sliding across the Utah desert on its roof.

good points. ya i c what ur sayin nd it makes sense but things like the evo series is that they're completly differnt line of cars compared to the lancer nd its nt a rally art or MINES evo which r tuned. as for the m3 nd c63 those came out as the base car. the viper srt10 was base then ACR dcided to make a modded version which was more of a track car. google it. it says the the ACR is a highly modded version of the SRT10 even tho they did nothin to the engine extensive mods wer done to 4 handlin

notice it sayin the SRT10 is the stock car nd that ACR gave it upgrades

well ya, but cars get "upgrades" all the time from new model years and higher trims of the same car. Im just thinkin that if the upgrades are given to the car by an aftermarket company and NOT the manufacturer, then its a tuned or modded car. But anything done in the factory isnt. I see what u mean, tho. the acr isnt a base model, but at least to me, I dont see it as a modified car becasue its done "in-house". Like i said, u would then have to include the M3, even an RSX TypeS by your def.

again you say "ACR gave it upgrades". ACR isnt a company, its just the trim name of the car. Thats like calling "TypeS" a company for the RSX. Just try to look it up, the ACR was built in the dodge factory with a wing and splitter slapped on by Prefix Co. So u see, its not an aftermarket company like ur thinking, its just the trim name. So its not aftermarket tuned

I do understand what your saying, but by your definition, if the ACR is a tuned car then like I said you would have to include EVERY car that isnt the BASE car as tuned. Which is the M3, the SRT cars, AMG cars, TypeR and S cars, the EVO, the STI, every high end trim of a car, because they're not the BASE car. If you believe that then ok, but if not you should rethink your view of the ACR because it falls in the exact same category

heres a good analogy, the ACR is exactly like the 911 GT3. Its got better suspension, stickier tyres, its lighter, even has a roll cage. But it hasnt been touched by anyone but porsche, so its not a modified car or tuned. The ACR is the exact same thing. I think u agree with me, but u still believe ACR is a tuner company but its not. Its like the 968 club sport. Club Sport is a name like the American Club Racer moniker. But the ACR is just a dodge creation

ya i am fully aware that ACR is apart of Dodge i never said it was a differnt company let alone even being a company. i kno its a branch of dodge the way NISMO is of nissan nd RALLY ART of mitsubishi. so yea i do agree with u ther. bt do u agree with me that the ACR is nt stock its stock out of ACR bt its nt stock in terms of its base car. dnt take the way tunned/tune said the wrong way. i think u take it lik a tunner car bt thats nt the way i take. i take it as upgraged/modified/altered u know

ah I see, ya then I agree:) I think we were both seeing it the same way but I took your definition of tuned wrong lol. Oh well it racked my brain and made me think a lot about it and where its origins are, and I like learning new things. Thanks for not goin crazy like most people do when u have a conversation on here about cars haha:) A lot of car guys are so freakin nuts lol

ZR1 and ACR are STOCK cars buddy. Its like a Porsche 911 and 911 Turbo. Both are STOCK Porsche's but the turbo is an improved base car. Just like a ZO6 is a step up from the base Corvette, the ZR1is a step up from the ZO6. Same goed for the ACR.If you want a Mines R35 then you have to include other cars like the Hennessey Viper which is 1,000hp. Those are AFTERMARKET tuners. The ZR1 and ACR are factory cars.
