I know a guy who married a girl from Africa and in their culture the groom gives the brides father a dowry, in a way "purchasing" his daughter. My friend had to pay 100 goats, and two chickens. Roughly converts to about $1300 US. Haha, I hear that's the going rate of a one night stand in New York City these days...
