Bullitt is a 1968 thriller film starring Steve McQueen. It was distributed by Warner Bros.
The director was Peter Yates. The story was adapted for the screen by Alan Trustman and Harry Kleiner, based on the novel titled Mute Witness (1963) by Robert L. Fish (aka Robert L. Pike). Lalo Schifrin wrote the original music score, a memorable mix of jazz, brass and percussion.
The movie won the Academy Award for Best Film Editing (Frank P. Keller) and was nominated for Best Sound. Writers Trustman and Kleiner won a 1969 Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America for Best Motion Picture Screenplay.
Bullitt is most-remembered for its central car chase scene through the streets of downtown San Francisco, one of the earliest and most influential car chase sequences in movie history.[1] The scene had Bullitt in a dark "Highland Green" 1968 Ford Mustang G.T.390 Fastback, chasing two hit-men in a "Tuxedo Black" 1968 Dodge Charger R/T 440 Magnum. (In honor of the Mustang in the film, the Ford Motor Company produced a limited edition 2001 Ford Mustang GT "Bullitt Mustang," which took styling cues from the '68 movie car and even mimicked its exhaust note).

All the cars had beefed up frames..a stock suspention would foldup like a camp tent. The bad guys were stuntmen and without a Actor's Equity card couldn't do dialog...a very young Robert Duvall has a small part as a cab driver...Martin Luther King would be shot a few months after the movie's release..Robert Kenndy a few months after that..The VietNam war was in it's 5th year...it would go on for another 6 years..

The driver of the Charger Bill Hickman was an actor able to do dialog. They chose not to use any so as to keep the focus on the chase itself.

here is somethin to surprise u all imagine this....Two 1968 390 CID V8 Ford Mustangs (325 bhp) were used for the chase scene, both owned by Ford Motor Company and part of a promotional loan agreement with Warner Bros. The Mustangs' engines, brakes and suspensions were highly modified for the chase by veteran car racer Max Balchowsky. Ford Motor Company had also originally loaned two Galaxie sedans that were intended to be used in the chase scenes,

I read in an article how the movie people told the city that they were only going to run the cars about 30 mph, to get them to agree to close off the city streets for the chase. Then they ran the cars as fast as they did to make it a great scene.
They could do a remake of this movie, using modern versions of these cars. A new Mustang and a new Charger could do a nice chase.

How about this, the motorcycle guy was actually the same guy who did all the driving they wouldn't let McQueen do, and the Charger was never messed with or worked on at all, whereas the Mustang needed new suspension after each jump. Also, the Mustang's soundtrack is actually a Ford GT40. Also, after the gas station explodes, watch just left of it and you can see the Charger go flying through some wooden guards : )
