I don't believe in this commercial. The original devotees of Nick Drake's music are angry. Such a beautiful song should not be advertising a stupid car. This did bring a new crowd to Nick Drake's music, but they found out about him the cheap, mainstream way. Thats no fun. Half the people will only listen to this song as well and never take the time to listen to the rest of his brilliant songs.

Thank you so much for posting this video!
Absolutely one of the best American commercials, hands-down.
Like others, it introduced me to Nick Drake and for that, I'll forever be grateful to VW.
Just a brilliant spot that showcased the notion that quite often, the best things in life are the simplest.
Kudos to VW and their ad agency and I truly hope that more commercials are made like this in the future!

You guys.....sheesh. This is a great ad. It is rare that you will get a commercial that is not just a commercial but that actually says something important. This is what I think that something is; the journey is more important than the destination. Thus the irony of the inevitability of death, how their party looked crass and shallow. I always loved this commercial. Journey Well.

i remember seeing this commercial when i was very young, and getting chills. now i am an all-grown-up connoisseur of indie music, actually know who nick drake is, and appreciate it even more. nothing in the world beats the sense of infinite possibility you get from a nighttime drive. it's almost a spiritual experience.

ha i wrote about this commercial for a journal for my advertising class this semester. i talked about how volkswagen didn't advertise what they intended to. when i saw this commercial 7 years ago i wanted a nick drake cd, not a cabrio! this is a beautiful song though and is visually probably my favorite commercial.

If this song is so meaningful to you, then the fact that it was used in a commercial should not have any impact whatsoever on your feeling about the music. The commercial has taken nothing away from you.

OMG, this is my second favorite commercial EVER. You tube is great!!! Silly but, I have been trying to reenact this summer nights drive on a few occasions, came close this summer. Hehe. Ahh, such a nice commercial and song.

what an abuse of a beautyful sad song! what was VW thinking their customers are like, especially golf drivers (like: brain-dead-boom-boom music)?

The way I understand it, Eichmann and his gang paid *South* America a long visit after they burned most of the European continent. And *South* America had rather open arms when they finally arrived. I mean, after all, Argentina really needed an airforce, and the "Boys from Brazil" weren't here just to sell bars of soap while lying on the beach all day...

You're right. The commercial is a perfect combination of beautiful music and soft-sell. The characters are just right and the director gets everything across in 60 seconds. It's a mini story with a message (obviously) and made more poignant by Nick's plaintive voice.

One of those rare ads where it hits just the right chord. it is that shared experience we all have when it all comes together. Nick was taken too soon, but we can all have a private experience and share his emotions. Great song. Great pairing. I have a 40 year old convertible, and for the last few years, I play this song and search for the moon every time with the top down.

I thought the same thing when I saw this commercial. I want that song not the car and I want to go on a roadtrip and play it at nite!!! Great comment.

this is one of the first commercial songs that wasn't all chopped up to hell to fit the time alotted. They just let it play naturally. Bravo to the ad folks who dreamed this one up.

i think this video does justice to nick's memory. it's not this stupid video trying to advertise this flashy, sweet new car, but something more.

Sometimes We DO need the mainstream media to open us up to "new experiences/new music." I'm sure most people didn't just stop at "Pink Moon" with Nick Drake, I'm sure this commercial opened their eyes to all of Nick Drake...thanks VW is right!

What were they thinking?? Well, maybe they were thinking "Hey, lets make a commercial that people will be talking about on the internet in 10 years." Maybe thats what they were thinking.

I hate when poeple get all high and mighty about music. It's as if because your life led it to you earlier, so you somehow hold sway over its domain. Do us all a favor and get over yourself. It is of no particular significants that people came to hear this song from a VW ad. The song's original fans liked it because it was good, which is the same reason VW picked it. Good things have a way of going into circulation.

Kind of odd, considering the song is about death. At least that's how I interpret it.
